AMSTERDAM, N.Y. - Police in Amsterdam say they responded to a distress call of a woman drowning in the Mohawk River at Lock 11 in the City of Amsterdam.
Upon arrival, police say a good Samaritan who was fishing at that time was holding onto a woman by her right hand. The woman was submerged underwater.
Police lifted the woman over a 5 foot ledge onto shore and she was transported to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment. Police say an investigation determined the woman was suicidal.
The Amsterdam Police Department thanks the combined effort between the fisherman and officers for saving the woman's life.
