Man killed after apparent cliff jump at Canajoharie Falls

CANAJOHARIE, N.Y. -- An apparent cliff diving accident in Montgomery County claimed the life of a Schenectady man, officials there said.

According to Canajoharie Police, calls came in just before 3 p.m. for a man who had jumped into the water at Canajoharie Falls and did not resurface.

Fire departments and EMS crews from across the county responded, and eventually recovered the body of 25-year old Israel Vazquez.

An autopsy will be performed on Vazquez at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam sometime this week.

Village police also ticketed three individuals who were in the area of falls at the time. According to police, the three men, all from Amsterdam, were in violation of no trespass orders.

Their relation to Vazquez is unknown at this time.

Police also said more arrests are likely as the investigation into the incident continues.
