ALBANY, N.Y. - A new push Thursday by New York State legislators to urge safe driving this summer and tougher laws to get repeat drunk
and dangerous drivers off the roads.
Three New York lawmakers are calling for tougher laws especially for repeat offenders that would direct the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles to implement regulations to permanently terminate driver's license
privileges for serial drunk and dangerous drivers.
"Three strikes and you're out" of a license; that's what Senator Hugh
Farley and Assemblymen Jim Tedisco and Steve McLaughlin are hoping to
make a permanent policy in New York. The "three strikes and you're out" policy was introduced in February to permanently terminate driving privelages of a conviction for DWI/DUI, actions causing an accident where there is serious
personal injury to another and the person who hit them is at fault, or vehicular
manslaughter.
The timing of this comes as so many people get ready to hit the road for Memorial Day Weekend, traditionally known as a busy travel time.
New York Legislators were joined by families affected by drunk drivers, advocates and Stop DWI Coordinators at the LOB Thursday morning.
