BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Cannon fire and a march by thousands of people marked the grand re-opening of the new $76 million dollar bridge across Lake Champlain.
The bridge opened to traffic in November, but the festivities were held Saturday. WCAX-TV says the party stretched across Vermont and New York state lines.
The old bridge came down a little over two years ago after inspectors found major structural flaws. With the new bridge open, residents of Vermont's Addison County and New York's Essex County say business has begun to return to their areas. Commuters have also gotten back a significant chunk of time now that the trip doesn't require a ferry ride.
On Saturday, thousands of people marched across the bridge, while others floated in vessels below the span.
