AMSTERDAM, N.Y. - A Target employee and his girlfriend have been arrested after the sheriff's department says the two exchanged counterfeit bills for items while he was working as a cashier.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says that on April 30th 20-year-old Ethan Whitman, of 176 Blanchard Road in Gloversville, was working as a cashier in the electronics department at Target when his girlfriend, 18-year-old Carley Goguen, of 539 County Highway 123 in Mayfield, purchased $1,227 worth of merchandise and paid Whitman using 13 counterfeit $100 bills.

Deputies say Goguen returned to the store an hour later and returned one of the items for around $800.

Based on the investigation, deputies say they charged both Whitman and Goguen with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 1st-degree. Goguen was additionally charged with Grand Larceny 4th-degree.

Whitman was remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail, and Goguen was released on $10,000 unsecured bond.
