State Police block off the left lane of I-87 north, just after the Twin Bridges
Debris, possibly the fuel tank, lies to the right of crews at the scene
HALFMOON, N.Y. -- New York State Police said a dropped fuel tank from a tractor-trailer was the reason for major traffic delays on I-87's northbound lanes Tuesday night.
A State Trooper with Troop G said the incident occurred just past the Twin Bridges around 7 p.m., when the tank apparently fell from the truck and spilled fuel onto the roadway.
As a result, The Department of Transportation shut down the left lane of I-87 north around 7:30 p.m. as crews worked to clean up the fuel spilled during the incident.
The left lane was closed for several hours, causing a rarely seen late night traffic jam on the Northway.
It was opened back up shortly before midnight.
