JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. - Forget about arriving at the prom in a backhoe. And she may think the tractor is sexy, but leave the John Deere back on the farm.
That's what police in the Mohawk Valley city of Johnstown are telling students at Johnstown High School, where teenagers have a tradition of arriving at the prom in the most outlandish vehicle possible including rowboats, military transport vehicles and backhoes, or by making a grand entrance on a farm tractor or sitting on lawn chairs in the back of a rental truck.
For ten years there has been a tradition of Johnstown students arriving at their senior prom in the most outlandish transportation possible, each one trying to outdo one another.
But, the tradition has come to an abrupt halt over fears that someone would eventually get hurt.
Instead, the school is opting for a much more common theme, a "prom walk" inside the high school auditorium.
Police say using those types vehicles can be considered reckless driving and they will be ticketed for arriving in a non-street legal vehicle.
