LEE, MA - Firefighters in Berkshire County continue to deal with a brush fire that started on Thursday.
According to a dispatcher with Lee Police, Fire, and Ambulance, the fire started around 1:00 p.m. at the base of October Mountain in the town. It then began to spread into the wooded area of the mountain.
Fire Chief Alan Sparks says the fire started when a homeowner was burning a pile of brush behind his house. The fire then spread because of wind. He explains that one gust of wind turned a controlled backyard fire into a raging brush fire.
The fire burned more than 20 acres and took emergency personnel from all over Berkshire County to battle the fire.
Firefighters and volunteers continue to traverse the mountainside on foot and ATVs. They're shuffling through piles of ashes and heavy smoke to find any more hot spots to prevent the fire from starting up again.
The Salvation Army is feeding and keeping the firefighters hydrated through all of this. They're providing meals and giving them support while they fight the fire.
