Vt. man charged with machete break-in

Posted:

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation after he was accused of breaking into a couple's home armed with a machete in order to stop them from arguing.

Thirty-three-year-old John Lynch of Bennington pleaded not guilty Wednesday to burglary and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Bennington Banner reports Milton Smith called police and told them his neighbor, Lynch, had broken in the door to his apartment with the machete. He said Lynch threatened to kill him if he did not stop shouting at his girlfriend. Smith said he had been arguing with her and that they had been shouting, but there were no threats or violence.
