ROOT, N.Y. - Thirteen wild, sick, and malnourished horses have been seized by NY State Troopers from a farm in Montgomery County.
State police say various animals were located on the farm of 51-year-old Carl Vitale, of 656 Lynk Street in the Montgomery County town of Root, in need of proper care and upkeep. They say numerous dead horses were also located on the grounds in different stages of decomposition.
Dozens of volunteers from the Easy Street Horse & Barnyard Rescue, Inc. and troopers seized seven stallions and six mares from the farm on Thursday. There are two wild young mares still to be caught, plus a bull, and cow.
Easy Street Horse & Barnyard Rescue says that many of the horses seized were extremely wild and were not at all trained. They had to be sedated in order to be caught. The horses were then brought to a vet.
Vitale has been previously charged with criminal nuisance and for failure to properly confine a bull located on his farm. Police say the investigation is continuing with further charges pending.
They are looking for volunteers and donations to help take care of the horses. Donations to help these horses can be made via PayPal to firstname.lastname@example.org or mail a check payable to Easy Street Horse Rescue at 109 Langley Road, Amsterdam NY 12010. Or they would also love donations of good horse quality hay (round and square) and senior and mare/foal grain (pellet form). Expenses are expected to reach $10,000.
If you're interested in adopting a horse or donating supplies for their cause you can call Easy Street Horse and Barnyard Rescue, Inc. at 518-421-0125.
