BENNINGTON, VT - Bennington police are continuing to look for a suspect that escaped the police department Thursday.

Police say 24-year-old Thomas William Mayer, of Bennington, escaped custody of the Vermont Department of Corrections on Thursday afternoon while he was being held for paperwork completion. As of Friday morning, Mayer is still on the loose with no leads yet in finding him.

Mayer was last seen on Thursday at about 12:20 p.m. He is suspected to have consumed illegal drugs prior to his detention, which is a violation of his probation, and police believe that is why he escaped custody.

Bennington police say Mayer was on probation for four underlying criminal cases: Unlawful Mischief, Interference to Emergency Services, and two violations of Conditions of Release.

Mayer is described as a white male, 5'10", 180 lbs, balding hair, and facial hair. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a long sleeve camouflage shirt.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Department of Corrections at (802) 447-2777, Vermont State Police at (802) 442-5421, or the Bennington Police at (802) 442-1030.
