ALBANY, N.Y. - 600 town and county highway superintendents from across New York are lobbying the legislature for more money to repair local roads and bridges.
While they say Governor Andrew Cuomo's budget calls for a 52% increase in spending for state capital programs, aid for local highways has remained flat for five years. They are asking for that to be bumped up this year.
It is of special concern for areas like Greene County hit hard by flooding last year from Tropical Storms Irene and Lee. Eight bridges and chunks of major roads were destroyed in Greene County. The County Highway Superintdent Gary Harvey says his share of the recovery costs is more than $2 million. Without help from New York State, he says some roads will go unpaved and perhaps some will even close.
