COHOES, N.Y. - Police in Cohoes say a 14-year-old boy was victim to an attempted abduction while walking to school Tuesday morning.
The boy was on his way to school, walking along the Mohawk Hudson Bikeway, when he was allegedly approached by the suspect, 80-year-old William Gardner, of Cohoes, who offered the teen money to perform a sex act.
The boy was able to get away from Gardner, and once he got to the Cohoes Middle School told school officials what had happened, who then called police who say the student did extactly the right thing.
The school sent out an email to parents immediately after the incident happened. "We try to teach our kids to do the right thing, and we have all these people out here doing the wrong thing," said one parent outside of the Cohoes Middle School.
Police say Gardner offered the teen $20 for a sex act.
Police in Cohoes say Gardner is being charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a misdemeanor. He was arraigned in court Tuesday evening, and was so angry when he left he walked right into traffic while yelling at the news crews.
Police and school administrators say this is an unfortunate reminder that kids need to stick together and travel in groups.
