POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) - A new report reveals for the first time that a Hudson Valley police officer killed by a suicidal man last year was slain with his own gun before the man killed himself.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office on Thursday released its report into the fatal shooting of city of Poughkeepsie police Officer John Falcone by Lee Welch in February 2011.
The report says Welch shot Falcone with the officer's own service handgun while the two struggled after Falcone had confronted Welch near the city's train station. Welch had just fatally shot his estranged wife as she sat in a car with their 3-year-old daughter.
The report also reveals Welch left two notes indicating he had planned to end his life that day.
