BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Labor is delaying an order that would have required a Bennington school district to pay teachers the difference in pay after a new contract was reached following a nine-day strike last fall.
The union representing more than 300 teachers in southwestern Vermont filed a complaint in December saying the district had not paid them the difference between what they were paid under a previous board-imposed contract and the new contract, which was retroactive to July 1.
The Department of Labor had ordered the district to pay the difference, but Commissioner Annie Noonan said Wednesday the questions raised by the district warranted further examination.
The department is asking the two sides to meet informally on March 16 to review the case.
