BENNINGTON, Vt. - Two suspects have been arrested after allegedly stealing a cart full of groceries from the Wal-Mart in Bennington.
An officer was off-duty when she recognized the two suspects responsible for the Wal-Mart grocery theft inside a Price Chopper grocery store in Bennington, Vermont with a cart full of groceries ready to walk out the door without paying. She then called the police department for assistance from on-duty officers.
Police identified and arrested 26-year-old Teri Fowler, of Townshend VT, and 31-year-old Daniel Wainwright, of West Townshend VT, for attempted retail theft at the Price Chopper and for retail theft at Wal-Mart in Bennington.
Police say both Fowler and Wainwright told officers go to different towns to shoplift so that nobody will recognize them on video or in person. Police say they had a list of stores typed out from Townshend to Bennington where they were "shopping." The list included stores in Wilmington, Arlington, Shaftsbury and Bennington, Vermont and North Adams, Mass. The stores ranged from major box stores to local convenience, electronics, boutiques and clothing stores.
