PITTSFIELD, Mass. - One person is dead after being struck by a train in Pittsfield Tuesday night, according to city police.

Pittsfield Police tell NEWS10 ABC the incident happened around 7:12 p.m. Tuesday on the railroad tracks adjacent to Depot Street in the city, right near the Amtrak station.

Rescue and EMS from Pittsfield Fire Department, County Ambulance, and Pittsfield Police officers were dispatched to the scene, discovering a westbound locomotive struck 45-year-old John Castonguay, of Pittsfield, while he was walking westbound on the tracks, pinning him under the train.

Castonguay died at the scene.

The train involved, a CSX train, was still stopped on the tracks at 11 p.m. A preliminary investigation shows the train was travelling approximately 25 mph. The engineer saw the victim about 200 feet before the collision, sounded his horn, and applied the emergency breaks.

The case is still under investigation.
