ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany Police have arrested the man they say was the driver in Saturday's fatal hit-and-run incident in the city.
19-year-old Ian Eckhardt-Rigberg, of Albany, turned himself into police late Tuesday afternoon, a news release stated.
According to police, Eckhardt-Rigberg has been charged with Manslaughter 2nd-degree and a felony charge of Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Auto Accident Resulting in Death in connection with the incident that killed 53-year old Albany resident Rozell Whitehead.
Eckhardt-Rigberg pleaded not guilty to both charges in Albany City Court during his arraignment on Wednesday morning.
It is alleged that Eckhardt-Rigberg struck Whitehead at the corner of Henry Johnson Boulevard and Third Street around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Police said Eckhardt-Rigberg did not stop after hitting Whitehead and continued to drive south down Henry Johnson.
Shortly afterward, Albany police said Eckhardt-Rigberg did report being in an accident to Bethlehem Police. His case was turned over to Albany Police once his involvement in the hit-and-run accident was determined.
