ALBANY, N.Y. - The New York State Police confirm with NEWS10 ABC that a trooper did engage in a very brief high speed chase with the vehicle thought to be involved a fatal hit-and-run.
A NYSP spokesperson tells NEWS10 a trooper spotted the vehicle traveling eastbound on I-90 travelling at a high rate of speed.
The trooper is said to have fully engaged his lights and was in radio contact with dispatch.
But, due to safety concerns and the distance between the trooper and the car, the trooper called off the chase which lasted less than 30 seconds. The trooper said he saw the car exit the highway onto Henry Johnson Blvd.
Police say the victim, 53-year-old Rozell Whitehead, was crossing the road at Third Street when a driver headed south on Henry Johnson hit him. Whitehead was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center after the accident.
Witnesses say the driver stopped for a brief moment before quickly taking off.
The State Police are cooperating fully with the Albany Police Department and their ongoing investigation into this incident.
