ALBANY, NY - A man has died after a hit-and-run accident in Albany on Saturday night.
NEWS10 ABC was first to report about the incident that happened on the corner of Henry Johnson Blvd and Third Street around 8:00 p.m.
The victim, a 53-year-old Rozell Whitehead, was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center after the accident. Whitehead, of Lark Street in Albany, was a level three sex offender. He served 25 years in prison for raping a woman back in 1984.
Police say Whitehead was crossing the road at Third Street when a driver headed south on Henry Johnson hit him.
Witnesses say the force of the crash was so intense, the man flew across the intersection, landing in front of the New York Supermarket. Witnesses say the driver stopped for a brief moment before quickly taking off.
However neighbors in the area did not seem surprised by the crash and say the exisiting yield sign is not enough. A local resident Vincent Douglas says, "It's something I expect to happen. I'm glad it's not me. But really I know it would have happened sooner or later."
Neighbors hope this devastating crash will lead the city to take action.
Police have not yet released a description of the car involved in this hit-and-run. Albany police spokesperson James Miller says the driver has been identified, however the suspect is not in custody at this time. Once the investigation is finished then a determined can be made on any charges.
