SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Crews in Schenectady quickly dealt with a house fire late Wednesday night in the city's Hamilton Hill neighborhood.
Fire department officials tell News10 they received several calls just before 9 p.m. of heavy smoke coming from 511 Schenectady Street. Upon arrival, they found flames shooting from the top of the two-story home. The flames were mostly extinguished by 10 p.m.
All inside were able to exit the home safely.
Edward Bates, who is on oxygen and recently had cataract surgery, was inside the home as it burned. He told News10 that he was unaware of the fire until informed of it by a neighbor.
"I didn't even realize what was going on until a gentleman came through, the neighbors came through, and told me. Prior to that I didn't smell smoke or anything else," Bates said.
During efforts to put out the blaze, parts of the home's roof collapsed. No one was injured when this happened or during efforts to fight the fire.
There is no word yet on a cause.
