BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The next president of the University of Vermont is going to be paid $447,000 in pay and deferred compensation during his first three years leading the university in Burlington.

The university announced Wednesday that E. Thomas Sullivan will become UVM's next president on July 15.

Sullivan is a lawyer who most recently served as a vice president and provost at the University of Minnesota.

He will succeed Dan Fogel, who took office in 2002 and resigned Aug. 1. John Bramley, former UVM provost and professor, has been serving as interim president since Fogel's resignation.

The 63-year-old Sullivan is recognized as a national authority on antitrust law. He has written 10 books and more than 50 articles.

Sullivan is due to take office on July 15.
