ATTICA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say the number of cats rounded up at a western New York animal shelter overrun with felines has topped 500.
The spokeswoman for the Erie County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals tells the Daily News of Batavia that 504 have been found at its shelter in Attica in neighboring Wyoming County.
Officials say several more remain on the loose inside the building.
More than 250 of the cats have been transferred to other shelters. The others remain at the shelter, which is still being cleaned. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society has received 30 cats on Monday, which will be ready for adoption soon.
The Attica SPCA shelter was raided last Wednesday by state police and Erie County SPCA workers investigating animal cruelty reports.
Authorities say the cats were living in "horrific" conditions.
No charges have been filed but the investigation is continuing.
