Police: Driver had been drinking before fiery crash

KNOX, N.Y. - Police have identified the driver of a truck that crashed in Albany County last week, burning for an hour before the wreckage was discovered.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office says the victim of the crash is 21-year-old Matthew Arnold of Berne. Officials say calls came in around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning for a vehicle that overturned on Route 146 in the town of Knox. By the time the paramedics arrived, the fire had already ceased, and Arnold was severely burned.

Sheriffs say that it's been discovered Arnold had been drinking in at least two area bars prior to the accident. They say Arnold was even kicked out of one bar for being too intoxicated.

Police say Arnold then took the truck from a friend he was staying with and was trying to drive himself to another friend's home in Schoharie when he crashed.

Speed is the confirmed factor in causing the accident. Police say beer bottles were also found on the floor of the vehicle.
