300 cats seized from western NY shelter

Posted:

MENANDS, N.Y. - The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society has received 30 cats out of 300 that were seized earlier in the week after living in deplorable conditions at the Wyoming County SPCA.

State police executed search warrants last week after receiving a complaint about hundreds of cats at the Wyoming County SPCA facility who were allegedly not being properly cared for and had not been checked by a veterinarian.

When they arrived, officials found more than 300 cats living at the shelter in Attica and at an adoption center in Erie County. Workers needed to wear chemical suits just to enter the shelter, due to the horrendous smell and conditions.

A tent was set up outside the shelter to serve as a clean-up and staging center because of the high number of cats and uncertainty in their health.

The Erie County SPCA took in the cats and put out a call for help.

The State Police investigation is continuing but neither troopers nor the Wyoming County district attorney have commented on possible charges. There is no state or federal law which restricts cat ownership or deals with animal hoarding.
