52 people snookered by NY lawyers get $1.5 million

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The New York State Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection says it has reimbursed more than $1.5 million to 52 clients whose money was dishonestly taken by their former attorneys.

The fund, administered by an unpaid seven-member board, says 20 lawyers were responsible for the misconduct.

Over 29 years, it has restored more than $156 million to some 7,000 eligible clients hurt by the misconduct of 997 lawyers.

The fund are supported by an attorney registration fee.

New York has more than 271,000 registered lawyers.
