ALBANY, N.Y. - Mothers may want to check twice before buying their next bottle of baby formula, because according to a new study, it could contain arsenic.
According to a study out of Dartmouth College, a rice-based ingredient that sometimes contains arsenic was found in two out of 17 formulas tested.
ABC News reports that they are Baby's Only Organic Dairy Toddler Formula and Baby's Only organic Soy Toddler Formula.
One of them had a total arsenic concentration level of as much as six times the U.S. federal limit of drinking water.
"You just trust that baby formula would be safe, you don't think that anything like that would happen," said mother Jenna Shiera.
"I would hope they would know not to put something like that in my child's food," said mother Amanda Seward.
Arsenic is toxic at high doses. Exposure to a baby could cause damage to the liver, skin, kidney and cardiovascular system.
"This would be horrible I would be very upset, I'd want to sue someone if I found out it was in my daughter's formula," said Seward.
Many women said there is only one way to be sure your baby's formula is safe. "I breast feed her, it's the best way to avoid that sort of problem," said mother Meredith Grosshandler.
