Schenectady B.O.E. to appoint new Superintendent, discuss changes

Posted: Updated:

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Schenectady City School District Board of Education is expected to appoint a new Superintendent of Schools Wednesday night, as well as discuss some potential cost-cutting changes to the district.

The Board of Education is meeting Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Zoller Elementary School to appoint Laurence Spring as the new Superintendent replacing John Yagielski, who has been serving as Interim Superintendent. Spring has been serving as superintendent of the Cortland Enlarged School District for the last six years.

Parents are expressing concerns over some big changes that could be on the way for teachers and students of the Schenectady School District. Yagielski introduced a plan which includes changes to the district such as cutting around 18 teaching positions, rearranging the high school schedule to be a seven class day as opposed to an eight class day, as well as closing Oneida Middle School.

These changes would save around $1.2 million in the district's budget.

Parents are invited to attend the school board meeting on Wednesday night where more details of the plan will be discussed, as it's in the early stages.

NEWS10 will have an update after the meeting. Check back to news10.com for updates.
