UPDATE: Motorist involved in the fatal Knox crash Wednesday may be identified
KNOX, N.Y. – A motorist has died following a rollover accident that resulted in the vehicle catching fire in Knox.
Craig Apple with the Albany County Sheriff's Department tells NEWS10 that calls came in around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning for a car that overturned on Route 146 in the town of Knox.
The vehicle was on fire at that time and was reported by another motorist who was passing by. Apple believes that the car may have caught fire closer to 4 a.m. which left an hour in-between before paramedics arrived on scene.
By the time the paramedics arrived, the fire had already ceased, and the motorist involved in the crash was severely burned.
Route 146 was closed from Ryan Road to the Schoharie County border line for most of the morning following the incident.
Speed has been the confirmed factor in causing the accident, although beer bottles were also found on the floor of the vehicle. A toxicology report of the motorist may be near impossible to conduct given the severity of the injuries.
Sheriff's Investigators have determined that the registered owner of the truck loaned the vehicle to a subject in Schenectady. The subject in Schenectady is claiming the vehicle was taken from his driveway overnight.
Officals also say they have determined the burned body found in the vehicle was a male subject. The determination was made as a result of an autopsy.
Apple says that the department is 90% sure they have the identification of the deceased male. Surveillance video is currently being reviewed from a few local bars that may just be the key factor in identifying him.
According to Apple, if the police department can identify a particular individual with whom this male subject was with at the bars prior to the events leading up to the fatal accident, it would be the confirmation that police need.
