ALBANY, NY - Last week NEWS10 ABC showed you how some multiple DWI offenders
never lose their license if their convictions don't fall within the four or
eight year time periods the state counts for license revocations.
Assemblyman Jim Tedisco spoke with NEWS10 ABC's Lydia Kulbida about the bill
he is proposing to close the loophole.
Tedisco says, "This would be a very stringent law, but a law I think we
need which says there will be no considerations, three strikes, three
convictions and you're out, you lose your license and driving privileges and if
you break that law you could go to jail for four years. We'll get you off the
roadway one way or another."
"It's unacceptable to have this many individuals on our roadways who
continue to be unsafe, who continue to turn their vehicles into a two ton weapon
when they get behind the wheel under the influence of drugs or alcohol."
Meanwhile on the senate side, Charles Fuschillo is working on strengthening
the language to make permanent revocation in New York after multiple DWI's permanent.
NEWS10 ABC will follow their progress. Lydia Kulbia will meet this week with
the commissioner of the DMV to talk about what can be done now to keep roads
safer.
