MAYFIELD, N.Y. - State Police in Mayfield arrested a 19-year-old Amsterdam resident on Monday for grand larceny and identity theft after using a man's debit card racking up over $900 worth of purchases.

Police say Runako Brathwaite was arrested when police started an investigation after a Mayfield resident reported that he had used his debit card on February 1st while shopping at a nearby Lowes, and realized that it was no longer in his possession when he returned home.

When the store could not locate the lost card, the victim called police to report it lost or stolen.

The victim mentioned that he had utilized the self-checkout machine at the store for his purchase and that he was assisted in that transaction by a store employee - later identified as Brathwaite. During that assistance, he provided Brathwaite with his pin number so that the transaction could be completed.

A review of bank records revealed $915.75 of unauthorized purchases was on the debit card, until it was canceled by the Mayfield resident.

Based on the location of the purchases and further investigation, Brathwaite was arrested for one count of Grand Larceny and one count of Identity Theft, both felonies. He was remanded to the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail/ $5,000 bond.
