ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany County Sheriff's Department released results from the latest countywide STOP-DWI enforcement coinciding with Super Bowl Sunday.
The STOP-DWI sweep was conducted from February 3 to February 6 utilizing sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. This sweep netted 21 arrests for motorists allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Sheriff's Office also reports that 451 traffic stops were made with numerous citations being issued for a variety of violations. An alcohol-related crash occurred in the Town of Westerlo, as well.
This patrol was in honor of 20-year-old Anson Breen, of Colonie, who lost his life in February 2006 when the car he was riding in crashed into a tree on Lincoln Avenue in Colonie. The driver in that case, 20-year-old Thomas Lafore, was intoxicated and later pled guilty to manslaughter and is serving a sentence of 2 1/3 to 7 years in state prison.
The sweep was part of a statewide initiative and was not announced locally.
