ALBANY, N.Y. - State police say a man who led troopers on a high-speed chase for almost 40 miles on the state Thruway died when his car struck a tree.
The chase began when troopers from the State Police at Fultonville spotted a reportedly stolen vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, on the Thruway near Fonda just before 5:00 a.m. Monday.
The driver, later identified as 25-year-old Ricardo Bernabeu Jr, drove east at speeds topping 100 mph before skidding off the road and striking a tree at Albany Exit 23 when he attempted to exit the Thruway.
Bernabeu, of Rochester, was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police say Bernabeu was driving a Lexus stolen in Rochester
that he abandoned at a Canastota gas station, where he stole the Hyundai from in front of the store.
