Emma MaxwellFULTON, NY - According to the Schoharie County Sheriff's Office, a woman was arrested for stealing over $100,000 from a Fulton church.
Officers say 54-year-old Emma Maxwell stole the money over three years from the Breakabeen-North Blenheim Presbyterian Church while she was working as their treasurer.
"I've known her 32 years having lived in this community, her family has lived here forever and I'm very saddened," said Joyce Hodder, who lives a few hundred yards from the church. "It's disheartening, having a tough time functioning in this community as it is then after the devastation of Irene it's even a greater sadness."
The church noticed the missing money and reported it to Sheriff's Office in November.
Maxwell has been remanded to the Schoharie County Jail on $5,000 bail. She is scheduled to appear in the Town of Fulton Court on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.
