ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany police are
investigating a potential phone scheme in which a individual calls victims representing
himself as a police officer, saying there is an open investigation on them in which they owe a company
money.
Police responded to a
call Wednesday morning from a woman who lives on Knox Street. The
victim told the officer that on Monday she received several calls on her cell
phone and work phone from a man with a middle eastern accent who
represented himself as a police officer with the Bureau of Crime Investigation.
When the man called he told the victim that there was an open case on her in which
she owes $745 to one of the companies Southern
USA owns. When asked which company, the caller would not reveal
it. He directed her to write a letter stating that she wanted to resolve any
problems with the company out of court. She then was given a fax number to fax
the letter.
The
victim became alarmed and called police because the caller knew her social
security number, email address, and work phone number. She refused to give the caller any additional
information.
The victim told police that the caller was
persistent and that she had received several calls on her cell phone and work
phone since Monday.
A
search of the phone number shows it has a history of being used in scams and
since has been disconnected.
