WATERBURY, Vt. -- Vermont State Police have deemed an email blast sent Wednesday to members of state government, which threatened bodily harm, not a legitimate threat.
The emails were apparently sent to members of both the Vermont House and Senate. Police were first notified of the messages around 7:30 a.m. and received more reports of government members getting them as the day progressed.
The message said, in part, "my team is paid to assassinate you" and asked to be sent a sum of money to prevent any violence.
Despite the harsh words, State Police say the messages are but a scheme commonly used by people in other countries to extort money. They do not provide any danger to state.
Even without a legitimate threat, they are not taking the news lightly. In a statement, Detective Lt. Tim Oliver said, "The Vermont State Police take seriously all threats made against citizens of Vermont, and will investigate the incident to the fullest extent of our ability."
State Police are not releasing the names of the House and Senate members that received the emails.
