Rescued dogs get a new leash on life

MENANDS, N.Y. - Dozens of people stood in line at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society on Tuesday to adopt dogs that were rescued from a home where they were living in deplorable conditions.

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society rescued the dogs on January 10th from a Valley Falls home where 28 dogs and two cats were living in deplorable conditions. Many of the dogs were covered in fleas and feces.

The humane society said that 11 dogs were healthy enough to be adopted on Tuesday. They said the rest of the dogs are in foster homes, are puppies that are too young, or are too ill to be adopted and need time to recover

The remainder of the dogs and puppies seized will be become available for adoption over the next several weeks as they become health enough to be released.

The owner of the dogs, Laurie Hussey, was charged with child endangerment, for her daughter living in the deplorable conditions, and 26 misdemeanor counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

For more information on the dogs, contact the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society at 518-434-8128.
