Fire victims receive generous donations

ALBANY, N.Y.--An emotional response Thursday afternoon, as the community steps up to help a family left in need by a fire.

Thursday morning, an 18-year-old mother and her 4-month-old son were facing a harsh reality of having no where to go, after their stay ended at the Ramada Inn on Watervliet Avenue in Albany.

They had been staying at the hotel since Monday after a fire destroyed their home.

But Thursday afternoon, some people stepped up and gave them a lot of hope.

Precious Williams and her baby will now have a roof over their head until at least Monday. The manager at the Ramada Inn has extended their stay, saying he could not justify sending them out into the cold with no where to go.

But the good news doesn't end there.

Bags and bags of necessities were donated by the Walmart in Rotterdam. A woman who saw Williams' story Wednesday night on NEWS10 helped orchestrate the donations from Walmart.

The simple things that many take for granted, like socks and pajamas for her four-month-old son.

"This is stuff that people walk by every day, the necessities you need to live," says Williams. "It's just amazing. We need this stuff, I have nothing."

Williams says it's been a very difficult three days after a devastating fire destroyed her apartment on Sherman Street in Albany.

But now, she says she has hope, knowing the Ramada Inn can remain "home" through the weekend.

"It just took so much stress off of my shoulders," says Williams. "These people who are helping us and coming through for us, and it has just been amazing. There are some setbacks, but it's not the last. We have a lot more life to live."

The Ramada Inn has been in constant contact with the American Red Cross, to help find Williams and her family a home past Monday.
