Michael Rivera
AMSTERDAM, N.Y. - An Amsterdam man was arrested Tuesday night after fleeing a traffic stop and leading officers on a brief vehicle pursuit.
26-year-old Michael Rivera was stopped by police around 5:35 p.m. on Church Street for motor vehicle equipment violations. Rivera fled the traffic stop and led officers on a
brief pursuit along several city streets, finally stopping when the suspect
lost control of his vehicle and struck a telephone pole on Northampton Rd., near the intersection
with Stewart St.
Amsterdam police say officers conducting the pursuit were unable to
avoid the suspect vehicle, as it lost control, and both vehicles collided. Rivera then refused to comply with the officers' commands
and resisted arrest before being taken into custody after a brief
struggle.
An officer involved in the pursuit suffered a
broken hand and was treated and released from St. Mary's Hospital.
Rivera is charged with Unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, Reckless Driving, Agg. Unlicensed Operation, Resisting Arrest, all misdemeanors, as well as Unlawful Possession of Marihuana and numerous traffic violations.
