Police: DPW employee arrested for stealing diesel fuel from village

CHATHAM, N.Y. - State Police at Livingston say they have arrested a Department of Public Works employee for the Village of Chatham after an investigation into the report of larceny of diesel fuel.

Police arrested Christopher Sperl, of Chatham, on Monday after an investigation which started in July of 2011 was initiated into the report of larceny of diesel fuel by using the Village of Chatham fuel account at Main Care Fuel Company.

Over the approximate 5 month long investigation it was determined that Sperl was systematically utilizing the Village account at Main Care to steal diesel fuel from the Village.

He was charged with one count of Offering a False Instrument for Filing 1st, a felony, one count of Falsifying Business Records 2nd, one count of Official Misconduct, and one count of Petit Larceny, all misdemeanors by State Police and was released on an appearance ticket.

NYS Troopers say the investigation is still ongoing.
