ALBANY, N.Y. - A local man with two alcohol related convictions has been sentenced in Albany County Court to prison for the 2010 fatal crash that killed his pregnant girlfriend.
31-year-old Timothy Reichel, of Colonie, was given the maximum sentence of 7 1/2 to 15 years in prison on Friday for the October 29, 2010 death of his pregnant girlfriend, 21-year-old Crystal VanEpps. Reichel was found guilty of second-degree Manslaughter.
Both Reichel and VanEpps were thrown from the car after he crashed on Lishakill Road in Colonie while driving drunk. Reichel's B.A.C. was twice the legal limit two-and-a-half hours after the crash. It was unclear whether Reichel was driving, the prosecution contended that Reichel had been drinking and was driving. The jury convicted him on only the manslaughter charge.
NEWS10 ABC has spoken to the mothers of Reichel and VanEpps. Both mothers say they are heartbroken and both of them have lost out in this tragedy.
Reichel has been remanded to the Albany County Jail. His attorney says they will appeal the judge's decision because there was no proof that Reichel was actually driving.
VanEpps and her unborn baby will honored this weekend in a number of DWI sweeps throughout Albany County.
