Vt. police say vandals caused $20k in damage

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Bennington, Vt., police are looking for help in solving a case of vandalism that caused nearly $20,000 in damage to two excavators parked at a hospital.

The owner of HNB Excavating Inc. contacted police shortly after midnight on Dec. 8 reporting that the machines parked at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center had been extensively damaged.

Police say the company had a contract to do snow removal at the hospital and had moved the excavators there earlier in the evening.

The Bennington Banner reports that each machine had a punctured radiator and hydraulic radiator. The punctures caused oil and other fluids to leak out, making the machines inoperable.

Bennington Police Chief Paul Doucette says the damage to the vehicles was about $16,000. The hazardous fluids also had to be cleaned up.
