ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany County Executive Mike Breslin vetoed the 2012 budget Monday morning, according to Daniel McCoy, the Chairman for the County Legislature.
Breslin vetoed the $550 million spending plan, which lawmakers approved of, carrying an 8% property tax increase. This comes two weeks after the legislature approved an override of the 2% property tax cap, meaning Albany County homeowners would have paid around $50 more in county property taxes for 2012.
The legislature is scheduled to meet next on December 19th. McCoy said they will consider overriding the veto.
"This action creates a situation that is unfamiliar and perplexing due to the fact that a property tax cap override was a component of the budget," McCoy said in a statement Monday. "I will be working closely with Audit and Finance Chairman Morse and our counsel to determine the course of action that will best represent the best interests of our citizens."
