6-year-old calls 911 after car accident in Westerlo

WESTERLO, N.Y. - A remarkable six-year-old boy is being called a hero by Albany Police after he was able to call 911 for help after he and his mother were in a car accident on Saturday.

According to the Albany County Sheriff's Office around 12:00 P.M. 28-year-old Nikki Dober was driving southbound on Joslyn School Road in the Town of Westerlo with her six-year-old son, Aaron, when she took her eyes off the road for a moment and had to swerve to avoid hitting a truck.

At that time, the car over-corrected and went off the east side of the road, continuing down a steep embankment, about 40 feet, into a wooded area and rolled onto the roof.

Dober was unable to get out of the vehicle. "I was stuck in my seat belt," Dober tells NEWS10. "He came over and was able to undo my seat belt but I couldn't get out and I couldn't find my cell phone to get ahold of anybody.

However, her son Aaron knew exactly what to do. Aaron knew her cell phone was in her pocketbook and crawled out of the car through the trunk. Aaron climbed up a steep, snow covered embankment to call 911 for help.

"He was walking up the hill in socks and then he says to me 'Mom, I got your purse too' and I'm like 'Who thinks of getting my pocketbook?'" Dober says. "I was proud of him. He's everything."

Several witnesses stopped to help as well.

Berne and Westerlo Fire Departments responded and were able to extradite Dober from the vehicle. She was transported to Albany Medical Center with apparent minor injuries.

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple is praising Aaron's actions. "Most kids would panic and want to stay with mom," he says. "He left mom for the right reason, to get help for mom."
