HILLSDALE, N.Y. - The Columbia County Sheriff's Office has a 21-year-old Hudson man in custody as a suspect in a homicide that occurred in the village of Hillsdale Sunday night, after he stole a pickup truck from a residence in Claverack.
Sheriff's Patrols responded to a one car rollover car accident on Route 23 in Claverack around 6:42 p.m. on Sunday. Two good samaritans had stopped to try to assist the male involved in the accident, 21-year-old Shafiqul Islam, of Hudson, who crashed a 2006 Hyundai Accent that belonged to 73-year-old Lois Decker.
As the two people were trying to help Islam, he attempted to get into and drive away in one of the individual's cars. He was prevented from stealing the car by both people who had stopped to help and fled the scene on foot to a nearby residence, where Islam allegedly stole a 2011 Ford F-150 pickup truck from a garage.
As part of the investigation to the rollover accident, Deputy Sheriff's attempted to contact Decker about her vehicle. When they were unsuccessful contacting her by phone, they went to her residence at 18 Cold Water Street in Hillsdale, where they found her deceased in an apparent murder.
Law enforcement agencies issued a "BOLO" (be on the look out) for the stolen pickup truck, and included may also be involved in the Hillsdale homicide.
Around 10:00 p.m., state police spotted the pickup truck at the intersection of Warren and 6th Streets in the City of Hudson being operated by Islam. He was taken into custody at that time and charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd-degree, a felony.
Islam is a Level 2 Sex Offender and is currently on parole for a 2008 conviction and three year prison sentence from a felony offense of Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child Less than 17.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the murder of Decker, however Islam is a suspect in her death.
Decker was taken to St. Peter's Hospital in Albany where an autopsy will be performed. An exact cause of death should be determined at that time.
Islam is being held in the Columbia County Jail with no bail.
