Assault results in blindness of a child

RENSSELAER COUNTY, N.Y. – A Sand Lake man is being held without bail after an arraignment Saturday morning at Troy City Court.

According to Troy Police, Asa Madsen, 30, was arraigned this morning on the charges of reckless assault of a child (D Felony) and criminal contempt in the second degree (A Misdemeanor) after he harmed his girlfriend's 14-month-old baby while living with her sometime prior to Tuesday afternoon.

The 9-1-1 call was placed by a neighbor, who claims the mother said the baby slipped and fell in the bathtub hitting her head and causing a concussion. However, police prompted an investigation.

"The injuries the child sustained which were quite serious did not seem to be consistent with the explanation given by the care taker, as a rule that's a red flag we will usually look into to find out if there is any criminality in the child's injuries," said Captain John Cooney of the Troy Police Department.

The child is currently blind due to retinal hemorrhages in both eyes, and is currently under care at Albany Medical Center. It is unsure at the moment whether or not the child will regain her sight.

Captain Cooney says that he was in violation of a stay-away order of protection with the baby's mother, relative to a domestic violence incident in August of this year.

Madsen was arrested Friday afternoon on the charges, and will remain without bail in Rensselaer County Jail until his preliminary hearing Wednesday morning at Troy City Court.
