A comparison of a fake bill versus a real bill. The real bill is up top. (WTEN)
TROY, N.Y. - The Troy Police Department are investigating a passing of counterfeit $100 bills through the city.
Police have secured 14 fake $100 bills in the last 45 days, with the discovery of the bills becoming more frequent. The fake bills have been been collected from stores such as Stewart's, CVS, Dunkin Donuts, gas and grocery stores in Troy.
Troy detectives say the bills were couterfeited by a professional and are very good quality, many passing the pen test, but failing the magnetic strip test. Police are looking for the strip in the bill which does not match the denomination of the bill, and the president's image when held up to the light is not matching the correct bill.
The FBI and secret service has also joined in on the case.
Police say they have five possible suspects and one arrest is expected soon.
Troy police are asking vendors and people to check to make sure they have not become a victim.
