Police shoot and kill Broome man after standoff


BROOME, N.Y. (WTEN) - A man from the Town of Broome was shot and killed by police on Sunday after a standoff which occurred over a domestic dispute.

Police shot and killed 27-year-old Richard Welden, of 554 State Route 145, after he fired his weapon at police during a standoff at his home.

New York State Troopers and the Schoharie County Sheriff Deputies responded to domestic dispute at Welden's home after a 911 call, where officers found Welden armed with a shotgun.

Welden refused to drop his weapon and comply with officers when he started to fire his weapon officers who returned fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is still under investigation.
