Human case of West Nile virus contracted in Albany County

Posted:

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany County Department of Health has reported a human case of West Nile Virus in the county.

The mosquito-borne illness was discovered in a 60-year-old male, who is recovering at his home after a short hospitalization.

This is the first ever confirmed case in the county.

According to the Department of Health, it is believed that the recent flooding in the state has created conditions that increase the mosquito population, a direct consequence to a positive case of West Nile Virus.

All New Yorkers are encouraged to take guard against mosquitoes as best as possible, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquito activity is greatest.

The Department of Health says: "Many people who contract West Nile virus do not experience any type of illness, and an estimated 20 percent of people who become infected will develop mild symptoms including fever, headache and body aches, and possibly a skin rash or swollen lymph glands. However, West Nile Virus can occasionally cause serious illness and death, usually in older adults. It is estimated that one in 150 persons infected with the West Nile virus will experience more severe disease."

More information on West Nile virus is available at: http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/west_nile_virus/ and http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/index.htm. If individuals are experiencing symptoms or have specific medical concerns, they should contact their health care provider.
