AMSTERDAM, N.Y. - Police in Amsterdam were called to investigate the report of bones that were discovered on an island in the Mohawk River, originally thought to be human bones.
A brother and sister were kayaking on the Mohawk River Thursday evening when they stopped at Bronson Island for a break and noticed bones in the brush on the western side of the island.
The brother reported the findings to Amsterdam police on Friday. Detectives and police in Amsterdam, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, Amsterdam Fire Department and Scuba Unit responded to the island and were taken to the bones by the witness.
Upon further investigation by a coroner and forensic pathologist, the bones were found to be of animal origin, most likely a cow.
The Amsterdam Police Department has an active missing person case, Robert Wiltsie, who was reported missing on Oct. 17, 2010, but the idea it could be him was dismissed when it was determined the bones were not human.
